Pros

The EDA department was an interesting place to work. Almost everyone is extremely bright and competent. Being in a single company with a fab means no lawyers stop you from seeing how your software is used.

Cons

The chip fabrication business is not growing, so periodic layoffs are par for the course.

IBM has its own proprietary solution to most problems in chip design. The knowledge you gain will not transfer to other companies.

Advice to Management

Figure out how to build on industry standards. You are not going to build better EDA tools than Cadence. Instead, figure out how to extend them to incorporate what you can learn from your fab.
