Pros

Benefits are great. Work-life balance can be good if you're an efficient worker with a good manager and you leverage that.

Cons

IP Agreements are extremely restrictive, given the size of the company. Since IBM is into so many different areas of development, much of what you may be interested in working on externally, they could reasonably claim ownership of. Your group may not work on anything remotely close to what you want to work on in your personal time, but IBM can still claim ownership of it because it falls under the wide-open umbrella of the entire company's "actual or anticipated" business interests.

Advice to Management

Reduce the scope of IP contracts so you can effectively compete with smaller companies in the area of intellectual property freedom. The current approach often makes some of your best and brightest feel like slaves, intellectually speaking. Overall, it results in a loss for everyone, including IBM.
