Engineering Manager (Remote) Interview Experience

Process

The interview was two days long and immediately threw me into their codebase. However, the codebase was seriously gutted, making the specifications fragile. I was asked to write a simple join model and then a more complex filter feature within a Rails application.

There was not a lot of guidance, and it assumed I understood their business model and application design, even though I didn't have access to the full codebase. No questions were asked about career development, past experience, or projects. I didn't feel they took much interest in me as a person, only whether I could complete their test. It was a very one-sided interview.

Strangely, this was for an engineering manager role, yet they asked no questions about management style, how to grow teams, mentor, hire/fire, etc. It felt like they were interviewing for an individual contributor role. When I asked, they stated that all managers start out as individual contributors first.
