Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

Note: I was interviewing as a new grad for their Bell Labs program.

It was a pretty mediocre, if not puzzlingly simple, interview process. There were supposedly three to four rounds:

  • A "get to know you" preliminary round
  • A take-home assessment
  • A technical remote interview
  • A cultural fit/behavioral interview

For my first round, I scheduled an interview with one of their recruiters after submitting an application through their job listing for candidates they spoke with through Grace Hopper. When the day my call was scheduled for arrived, I waited for a couple of minutes but received no call. I sent an email but never heard back, assuming they had simply forgotten me.

Two to three weeks later, I received an email for a coding challenge. At the time, I was interviewing with multiple companies and decided to take a chance at it for practice. I don't recall if there was a time limit; there might have been one, but it felt rather arbitrary. The coding challenge had three questions:

  • A simple, typical programming challenge for which I wrote a basic for-loop program.
  • A simple SQL problem.
  • A "high scoreboard class design" type question, requiring the implementation of specific methods.

At this point, I was quite tired, having completed another coding challenge for a different company earlier. I decided not to do the third question, lol.

To my surprise, I was offered to continue with the interview process. The next step was to discuss a problem with an engineer. I was instructed to work on the problem before the interview. When I opened the CoderPad link they sent me, lo and behold, it was the scoreboard challenge I hadn't completed, lol. I spent about an hour and a half working on it, making mental notes. During the actual interview, I spent most of the time discussing my reasoning, the data structures I used, etc. The interviewer asked me to implement some additional code on top of it, which was pretty standard.

Finally, I was told I had an HR interview. By this point, I knew I was most likely getting an offer, as the HR interviewer skimmed through most of her questions, noting that I had already answered them with my responses to her previous questions, lol. I received a phone call a week later with an offer and found the interview process to be rather harmless, if not suspiciously easy.
