Amazon JumpStart is a youth apprenticeship program that offers high school students part-time employment at Amazon's Arlington-HQ2 corporate office. This paid opportunity is available to students from participating school districts in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) region. Apprentices work after school Monday-Thursday, up to 16 hours per week, typically between 2:00pm-6:00pm ET.
As a Software Development Engineer (SDE) Youth Apprentice, you will:
- Write real software and collaborate with experienced SDEs on real-world projects
- Be matched with a manager and mentor
- Influence Amazon technology and lead critical projects
- Contribute to areas such as distributed systems, data mining, automation, optimization, scalability, and security
- Engage with Amazonians for personal and professional development
- Expand your network and participate in activities with other apprentices
Key responsibilities may include:
- Collaborating with cross-disciplinary teams to design and bring innovative products to market
- Building distributed storage, index, and query systems
- Designing and coding solutions for broadly defined problems
- Working in an agile environment to deliver high-quality software
- Attending weekly stand-up meetings with software development teams
- Learning or reinforcing coding languages for web development, mobile apps, or client-interfacing mechanisms
- Leveraging internal Amazon tools and AWS Cloud services
The program is designed to accelerate both education and career success, offering flexibility for college-bound students and various options for future career paths.
Basic Qualifications:
- Currently working towards a High School Degree with expected graduation between May 2025 and May 2026
- Attending a high school participating in CareerWise D.C./CityWorks DC apprenticeship programming model
- Ability to work 16 hours per week after school hours
Preferred Qualifications (at least two of the following):
- Proficiency in at least one programming language: Python, C++, CSS, Java, JavaScript, HTML, C#
- Completion of at least one foundational course in Computer Science
- Programming experience or extra-curricular activities demonstrating interest/aptitude in coding
