Description For Software Engineer, Backend (Developer Tooling)

Benchling is revolutionizing the biotechnology industry through their R&D Cloud platform, enabling innovative companies to accelerate their research and development processes. As a Backend Software Engineer on the Performance Engineering team, you'll play a crucial role in developing internal libraries and tooling that implement Observability best practices.

The role combines deep software development experience with Observability and SRE principles to enhance Benchling's customer experience and scale their infrastructure. You'll have significant autonomy to identify and implement performance improvements across the technology stack, working closely with application and infrastructure teams to optimize system performance.

Your responsibilities will include designing and developing internal tools, building resources for performance analysis, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to address customer-impacting performance issues. You'll own projects from initial design through large-scale deployment, while also fostering a culture of continuous performance improvement through knowledge sharing.

The ideal candidate brings 2+ years of software engineering experience and takes a product-first approach to development. Strong problem-solving abilities and experience with modern Observability tools are essential. While prior life science knowledge isn't required, you should be eager to learn about the biotechnology domain.

Benchling offers a flexible hybrid work arrangement with 3 days per week on-site, competitive compensation ($141,104 - $190,906), and comprehensive benefits including medical coverage, 401(k) matching, parental leave, and professional development opportunities. Join a company that's making a significant impact in the biotechnology sector while working with cutting-edge technologies and practices.
