Description For Senior Materials Engineer (Metal 3D Printing)

Freeform is revolutionizing metal additive manufacturing with software-defined, autonomous 3D printing factories. As a Senior Materials Engineer, you'll establish the company's M&P infrastructure, strategy, and best practices for advanced metal 3D printing technology. This role involves hands-on sample testing, data analysis, and strategic process improvements.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Establishing M&P best practices and materials testing infrastructure
  • Operating equipment to measure material properties
  • Generating and tracking quality metrics for printed customer parts
  • Analyzing data and presenting key findings
  • Collaborating with the process development team to improve printing processes
  • Optimizing procedures for measuring and quantifying material quality
  • Creating automation for M&P procedures
  • Strategizing continuous improvement plans

The ideal candidate has:

  • Bachelor's degree in material science, materials engineering, metallurgy, or mechanical engineering
  • 7+ years of professional materials engineering experience (3+ years in metals)
  • Experience with metallurgical sample preparation techniques

Additional desired qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in relevant field
  • 10+ years of materials engineering experience
  • Experience with metal additive manufacturing, especially laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) processes
  • Process development experience
  • Familiarity with statistical data analysis software

Responsibilities For Senior Materials Engineer (Metal 3D Printing)

  • Establish Freeform's M&P best practices, and materials testing infrastructure and strategy
  • Operate equipment to measure material properties such as tensile strength, surface roughness, and microstructure
  • Generate and track quality metrics of printed customer parts
  • Organize, analyze and interpret data and present key findings
  • Work with process development team to tie key materials findings into improvement of upstream printing processes
  • Establish and optimize processes and procedures for measuring and quantifying material quality
  • Create automation for M&P procedures to take human out of the loop
  • Strategize continuous improvement plans to enhance system performance, reliability, and scalability

Requirements For Senior Materials Engineer (Metal 3D Printing)

Python
  • Bachelor's degree in material science, materials engineering, metallurgy, or mechanical engineering
  • 7+ years of professional materials engineering experience (with at least three years in metals)
  • Experience developing and optimizing metallurgical sample preparation techniques
