As a Principal Machine Learning Engineer, you'll play a crucial role in developing and scaling enterprise-wide AI infrastructure that powers everything from customer in-vehicle experiences to manufacturing innovation.
The position offers an opportunity to shape GM's AI future by designing and implementing foundational infrastructure for data processing, model training, and deployment across global operations. You'll work on cutting-edge AI systems while collaborating with vehicle and manufacturing teams to deliver high-impact solutions throughout GM's portfolio.
This role combines technical leadership with hands-on engineering, requiring expertise in AI/ML infrastructure, distributed systems, and cloud computing. You'll be responsible for architecting scalable solutions, establishing best practices, and mentoring other engineers while working with the latest AI technologies and frameworks.

The position offers hybrid work arrangement in Mountain View, CA, requiring office presence three times per week.

Responsibilities For Principal Machine Learning Engineer – AI Core Infrastructure
- Design, develop and test cutting-edge AI infrastructure, including data pipelines, fine-tuning frameworks and evaluation tools
- Collaborate with researchers and industry partners to understand technical requirements and measure impact
- Scale architecture to deploy reliably across large-scale applications
- Define best practices for AI software engineering across the company
- Provide technical guidance to internal teams and business partners
- Lead cross-functional development efforts with engineering and product teams
- Mentor engineers and foster technical growth across the teams
- Drive platform-wide architecture decisions with focus on scale, reliability and performance
- Set the long-term direction for AI infrastructure across GM's enterprise
Requirements For Principal Machine Learning Engineer – AI Core Infrastructure
- 10+ years in software engineering or ML infrastructure (or post-graduate equivalent)
- Proven track record of building cutting-edge AI infrastructure
- Strong understanding of modern AI algorithms, models and frameworks
- Experience deploying AI systems on Cloud-based GPUs/TPUs
- Fluency in Python, and at least one of C++/Go/Java
- Proven ability to architect production-ready distributed systems
- Highly developed communication and collaboration skills
- Recognized technical leader in infrastructure design, distributed systems, or applied AI
- Experience shaping platform strategy and influencing cross-org technical roadmaps
