Description For Mechanical Product Design Engineer, Google Cloud

Google's Platforms Team designs and builds the hardware, software and networking technologies that power all of Google's services. As a Mechanical Product Design Engineer for Google Cloud, you will design and evaluate data center systems, identifying product requirements and contributing to research and project planning. You'll be responsible for designing and optimizing an architecture that will scale with Google's continued growth, from the chip to chiller.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Owning the entire product design life-cycle from requirements gathering to manufacturing release.
  2. Developing and executing designs for complex systems backed by thorough engineering analysis.
  3. Creating test plans, performing testing, and validating designs to meet engineering requirements.
  4. Influencing products by providing mechanical and product design engineering expertise into the technology road-map.
  5. Mentoring team members and providing engineering knowledge.

This role requires physical interaction with hardware equipment in a simulated data center environment, utilizing Google labs, power, and safety equipment. Regular development and processing of engineering hardware must be performed on site.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical engineering and design principles, with expertise in designing for medium-scale production, sheet metal and injection molding, structural and thermal analysis. Experience in designing complex electro-mechanical assemblies and knowledge of chip/socket/cooling solution stack-ups is highly valued.

Google offers a competitive salary range of $122,000-$178,000 + bonus + equity + benefits, with the specific salary determined by work location and additional factors such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Responsibilities For Mechanical Product Design Engineer, Google Cloud

  • Own and design entire product design life-cycle including requirements gathering, concept generation, detailed design with analysis, verification testing, cross-functional reviews, and manufacturing release
  • Develop and execute designs for complex systems backed by thorough engineering analysis
  • Create test plans, perform testing, and validate designs to meet engineering requirements and troubleshoot, root cause, and resolve potential technical issues
  • Influence the products by providing mechanical and product design engineering expertise into the technology road-map with data-driven decisions
  • Identify and scope projects around innovation opportunities as well as technology risks
  • Provide engineering knowledge and mentor team members

Requirements For Mechanical Product Design Engineer, Google Cloud

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 1 year of experience designing mechanical components such as plastic or metal parts, mechanical assemblies, printed circuit boards, or flexes
  • 1 year of experience using computer-aided design (CAD) tools such as 3D MCAD, NX, Creo, or Solidworks
  • 6 years of experience in mechanical design and analysis (preferred)
  • Experience in mechanical engineering and design principles with specific expertise in design for medium-scale production, sheet metal and injection molding, structural and thermal analysis
  • Experience in designing complex electro-mechanical assemblies with an understanding of mechanical tolerances and tolerance analysis
  • Knowledge of chip/socket/cooling solution stack-ups, structural behavior, and reliability
  • Ability to architect solutions backed by business case analysis
