Description For Optical System Design Engineer

Google is seeking an Optical System Design Engineer to join their Devices & Services team, combining the best of Google AI, Software, and Hardware to create innovative user experiences. This role focuses on developing next-generation display technologies, particularly in near-eye display systems. The position offers a competitive salary range of $142,000-$211,000 plus additional benefits.

As an Optical System Design Engineer, you'll work with experienced optical engineers to evaluate and develop novel designs and architectures for display systems. The role involves close collaboration with both internal and external partners to validate and deliver prototypes and products. You'll be responsible for defining specifications, improving waveguide-based near-eye display systems, and supporting optical modeling efforts.

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in electrical engineering, physics, or related fields, with specific expertise in optics and imaging systems. Experience with optical modeling tools and programming languages like Python is highly valued. Responsibilities For Optical System Design Engineer

  • Work with internal and external cross-functional partners to explore existing and novel optical architectures, for near-eye display and related applications
  • Define system/sub-system/component-level specifications for new eye displays and related systems
  • Evaluate, design and improve waveguide based near-eye display systems
  • Align current efforts with cross-functional teams across System, PhotoDetector, Software, imaging, and optics
  • Support internal optics modeling and simulation efforts

Requirements For Optical System Design Engineer

Python
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a specialized field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP, etc.), or equivalent practical experience
  • 4 years of experience working in the imaging and optics technical environment, or 3 years of experience with an advanced degree
  • Experience with optical modeling tools (FDTD, RCWA, Ray-tracing, or Zemax OpticStudio) preferred
  • Experience in Python or other programming languages preferred
  • Experience with display systems preferred
  • Experience with waveguide based near-eye displays preferred
