Description For Research Scientist, Google Translate, Search

Google Translate's mission is to reduce the language barrier by translating text and making Google's products like Gemini accessible in more languages. As a Research Scientist on the Google Translate team, you'll be at the forefront of advancing machine translation and multilingual capabilities in Large Language Models (LLMs). Your work will have a direct impact on billions of users across various Google products, including Translate, Gemini, Search, Cloud, Chrome, Android, Ads, and YouTube.

In this role, you'll conduct cutting-edge research to improve translation quality and multilingual performance in LLMs. You'll design and run experiments, analyze results, and develop novel evaluation methods for machine translation and multilingual LLM performance. Your research will contribute to making Google's products more accessible and effective for users worldwide.

The ideal candidate has a PhD in Computer Science or a related field, with experience in deep learning frameworks and a track record of publications in NLP or ML conferences. You should be proficient in Python and have experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX. Strong analytical skills, creativity in problem-solving, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment are essential.

Responsibilities For Research Scientist, Google Translate, Search

  • Work within a team on research problems that are important for Gemini and Google Translate
  • Research novel techniques for improving translation quality and multilingual capabilities in Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • Design and conduct experiments for model quality improvements, analyze results, and determine steps for moving forward
  • Invent reliable automatic and human evaluation methods for evaluating machine translation and multilingual performance of LLMs, then integrate findings into the models
  • Maintain a strong connection with the Machine Learning/Natural Language Processing (NLP) community

Requirements For Research Scientist, Google Translate, Search

Python
  • PhD degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX
  • One or more scientific publication submission(s) for Natural Language Processing or Machine Learning conferences
