Description For Systems Development Engineer, Public Sector

Google is seeking a Systems Development Engineer for their Public Sector team, focusing on managing and automating services and systems at scale. This role is part of the Sovereign Operations (SOSR) team, which provides support for Database, Storage, and Backup systems within cleared spaces for government clients.

The position requires a unique blend of technical expertise in systems automation, infrastructure management, and security compliance. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with Kubernetes, Linux systems, and networking fundamentals, along with the ability to handle complex troubleshooting and system optimization.

As a Systems Development Engineer, you'll be responsible for ensuring system availability, performance, and security in compliance with government regulations. The role involves incident resolution, root cause analysis, technical guidance, and collaboration on system upgrades. You'll be part of a team that emphasizes automation, observability, and developing solutions that address systemic issues rather than just individual problems.

The position offers a competitive compensation package including a base salary range of $132,000-$189,000, plus bonus, equity, and comprehensive benefits. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to work on meaningful projects at scale while maintaining high security standards and supporting critical government infrastructure.

Key aspects of the role include:

  • Managing and automating services and systems at scale
  • Ensuring compliance with government regulations
  • Participating in 24x7 on-call rotation
  • Contributing to documentation and educational content
  • Collaborating with internal development teams
  • Implementing and maintaining security protocols

The role requires active TS/SCI clearance with Full Scope Polygraph, making it ideal for candidates with existing government security clearance who want to apply their technical skills to important public sector initiatives. You'll be part of Google Public Sector's mission to bring Google's innovative solutions to government and educational institutions while maintaining the highest security standards.
