Description For DCE Principal Mechanical Engineer - APAC

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft's cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy Principal Mechanical Engineer in the APAC Region to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world's largest online services.

As a Mechanical Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will manage, review, coordinate and provide key technical input during site due diligence, detailed design and/or construction administration phases of multiple datacenter projects on a global scale. You'll be part of the core team launching the Microsoft Cloud infrastructure worldwide, responsible for leading and directing consultants in the design and coordination of mechanical systems, associated controls, and overall topology aligning with Microsoft and site-specific requirements.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Making design decisions related to data centre projects including new construction, expansions, retrofits, upgrades, and standards upgrades globally.
  • Performing critical assessments of designs and decisions, supporting the application of required standards and country-specific regulations.
  • Engaging and managing external design consultants, running design workshops to ensure they deliver designs meeting the Basis of Design (BOD) requirements.
  • Collaborating with Global Technical Excellence team, Global Strategy team, and DC Operations teams to develop datacenter designs from BOD to Issue For Construction (IFC) and through the Construction Administration phase.
  • Traveling to sites for "Factory Witness Testing", consultant/vendor interaction, and final commissioning of installed systems.
  • Overseeing the delivery of multiple, concurrent, complete datacenter design solutions aligned with project scopes, schedules, and budgets.
  • Supporting requests, liaising with customers to develop specific project design requirements, and collaborating with other Microsoft engineering teams and Operations.

This role requires a detailed understanding of datacenter HVAC systems, cooling equipment selection, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, fuel systems, Building Automation System (BAS) controls, and related operational experience.

Requirements For DCE Principal Mechanical Engineer - APAC

Linux
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master's preferred)
  • Professional Engineer in Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years experience in mission critical projects
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in consulting engineering with minimum of 7 years' experience as lead engineer
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of mission critical environments
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent knowledge of building codes and regulations
  • Experience in high critical environment projects
  • Proficiency in MS office packages
  • Ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent mission-critical infrastructure projects
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to perform complex business case analysis
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally
