Description For Hardware Lab Engineer

Microsoft Silicon and Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft's expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft's "Intelligent Cloud" mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions.

As a Lab Hardware engineer within the Azure SES and Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) team, you will support innovative projects and apply your expertise in a fast paced & technically driven environment. You will work with a diverse set of teams to ensure that lab operations are optimized and tuned to perform in a complex environment while continuing to scale space, capacity, and capability.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing detailed project implementation instructions for integration of development systems and/or test configurations into vetted lab environments.
  • Identifying all material, infrastructure, test equipment, fixtures, and consumable items required to support lab implementation needs.
  • Managing lab service requests, capability, and capacity planning.
  • Providing post-project implementation support and guidance for troubleshooting and maintenance.
  • Driving continuous improvement efforts to meet and support needs inclusive of system operational goals, capacity optimization, and emerging capability needs.

The ideal candidate should have:

  • BS/MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience in technical operations related to Server System architecture.
  • Background with system level qualification, validation, I/O interconnect, PCIE high speed data switches.
  • Experience with lab test equipment setups for signal measurement.
  • Good written and verbal communication & organization skills.
  • Basic project management skillset or experience in driving lab improvement/innovation.
  • Ability to work well independently and on a team, with a collaborative spirit and growth mindset.

Responsibilities For Hardware Lab Engineer

  • Provides detailed project implementation instructions for integration of development systems and/or test configurations into vetted lab environments
  • Identifies all material, infrastructure, test equipment, fixtures, and consumable items required to support lab implementation needs for each project request
  • Identifies and/or recommends vendors for material needs and submits procurement requests
  • Manages lab service requests in support of project implementations, lab maintenance, and equipment calibration needs
  • Manages lab capability and capacity planning within defined thresholds
  • Provide post project implementation support that includes equipment verification and configuration testing in support of defined project requirements
  • Provide guidance for required troubleshooting, maintenance and management of server racks, bench development set-ups, network connectivity, and infrastructure
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of all documented processes and procedures
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts to meet and support needs inclusive of system operational goals, capacity optimization, and emerging capability needs

Requirements For Hardware Lab Engineer

Linux
  • BS/MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent experience
  • At least 5 years of experience in technical operations related to Server System architecture

  • Experience with lab test equipment setups for signal measurement
