OpenAI is seeking an Information Systems Security Engineer for their Public Sector team to play a crucial role in achieving Authorization to Operate (ATOs) for systems in highly regulated environments. This position, based in Washington, DC, offers a hybrid work model with 3 days in office and relocation assistance. The role sits within the Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) team, which is fundamental to OpenAI's security mission.

Responsibilities For Information Systems Security Engineer, Public Sector

  • Drive the ATO process across multiple government and restricted environments
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to interpret security requirements and implement controls
  • Create technical documentation including System Security Plans (SSPs), risk assessments, and architecture diagrams
  • Act as a subject matter expert during audits and assessments
  • Continuously refine processes to improve compliance efforts

Requirements For Information Systems Security Engineer, Public Sector

Kubernetes
  • Active US security clearance
  • 5+ years of compliance experience in information security, data security, or infrastructure security
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS) and infrastructure primitives (Kubernetes, Terraform)
  • Strong familiarity with core security concepts and technologies
  • Experience in obtaining and maintaining ATOs in highly restricted environments
  • Deep understanding of USG security frameworks and policies (NIST, RMF, FedRAMP)
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • Exceptional technical program management skills
