Staff Software Engineer
Job Description
Oscar Health is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their Engineering team, focusing on their next-generation claims and payment processing systems. This role combines technical leadership with hands-on development, working on contract and pricing configuration, system extensibility through internally developed DSL, and data pipeline architecture.
The position offers a hybrid work arrangement with offices in New York City (Hudson Square), Tempe, and Los Angeles (Marina Del Rey), requiring at least two days per week in office. The compensation package includes a competitive base salary range of $192,000 - $252,000, plus comprehensive benefits including unlimited vacation, equity grants, and annual performance bonuses.
As a Staff Engineer, you'll lead complex technical projects across multiple teams, serve as a subject matter expert, and mentor other engineers. The role involves working with AI to automate processes, ensuring scalability and reliability of claims and payment systems, and collaborating with product managers and designers to solve challenging problems.
The ideal candidate should have 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 5 years leading technical teams and cross-company deliverables. You'll report to the Director of Software Engineering and play a crucial role in shaping the technical direction of Oscar's healthcare technology platform.

Responsibilities For Staff Software Engineer
- Serve as the subject matter expert on business and technical domains
- Lead planning, execution and release of complex technical projects across multiple teams
- Work with partners, product managers, and designers to solve challenging problems
- Lead and mentor engineers and engineering teams
- Ensure team's delivery of large or complex technology capabilities
- Facilitate culture of collaboration within engineering team
- Guide development of Service-Level Objectives (SLOs)
- Work with leadership to assign prioritization of technical roadmap
- Build software to minimize effort and business impact during maintenance
Requirements For Staff Software Engineer
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience
- 5+ years of experience as a leader of cross-pod or cross-company deliverables
- 5+ years of experience leading technical contributions
- 5+ years of experience with practical application of CS concepts
- 5+ years of experience setting and enforcing coding standards
- 5+ years of experience leading technical teams including mentoring
