Description For Machine Learning Engineer

Polaron, a spin-out from Imperial College London, is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer to join their team of four (CEO, CTO, Chief Scientist, and Head of Engineering) as the first ML engineer. This role offers significant autonomy and influence over the development and direction of the platform and product.

Polaron's mission is to become world leaders at the interface between AI and materials, supporting the next generation of advanced materials critical for a sustainable future. They're building a SaaS product allowing materials engineers to leverage cutting-edge AI in their work.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Optimizing efficiency and robustness of Polaron's existing algorithms for material characterization, exploration, and optimization
  • Adapting cutting-edge machine learning methods for material science applications

The role is primarily in-person, working from their East London office (near Old Street and Hoxton Overground) at least four days a week. Polaron is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team and encourages applications regardless of background or experience.

Technologies used include:

  • Frontend/Backend: TypeScript with React/Next.js and Express/Prisma
  • Machine Learning: Python/PyTorch
  • Infrastructure: Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform (AWS)
  • Database: PostgreSQL
  • CI/CD: Github, Github Actions

Requirements:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, AI, Math, Physics, or similar (PhD in STEM subject desirable)
  • Proficiency in production-level code for computer vision applications with Python ML libraries (e.g., Pytorch, TensorFlow)
  • Experience with version control and cloud computing (e.g., AWS, Azure)
  • Enthusiasm for complex problem-solving
  • Strong technical communication skills
