Description For Advanced Cell/Module Design Engineer

Re dba Slate, a new US company exploring development in the electric vehicle space, is seeking an energetic, organized, and experienced Advanced Cell/Module Design Engineer to join their growing Battery team. This role is based in Troy, MI.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the selection of cells, architecting, designing, and implementing module designs and module to pack integrations from new concept through production launch and ramp for different cell formats. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Developing, validating, and releasing advanced battery cells for HV batteries (LFP, Sodium-ion, Solid State, etc.)
  2. Creating cell, module, and pack technology roadmaps
  3. Establishing test procedures and working with internal/external test facilities
  4. Leading battery cell suppliers to ensure component and performance specifications are met
  5. Using structured problem-solving methods to identify and resolve propulsion system issues
  6. Generating ideas to reduce product cost and improve quality
  7. Analyzing data and providing technical recommendations to management
  8. Participating in component integration events and prototype testing

The ideal candidate should have:

  • A Master's degree in a relevant field (Electrochemistry, Engineering, Physics)
  • 3+ years of relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge of cell chemistries and high voltage battery technologies
  • Experience with tools like MATLAB Simulink, GT, ANSYS, etc.
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills

Exceptional candidates may have a PhD, 3+ years of experience with electrochemistry of battery cells, prior experience at an EV OEM, hands-on experience building battery modules and packs, and familiarity with electrochemical techniques for cell validation.

Responsibilities For Advanced Cell/Module Design Engineer

  • Develop, validate, and release Advanced battery cells for the HV battery, specifically LFP, Sodium-ion, Solid State, etc.
  • Laying out cell, module and pack technology roadmaps
  • Establish test procedures to fulfill DVPR requirements
  • Lead battery cell suppliers to ensure fulfillment of component and performance specifications
  • Work with engineering lab and test facilities to complete HV cell and battery testing
  • Use structured problem-solving methods to identify root cause for propulsion system issues
  • Generate ideas to reduce product cost and improve quality
  • Analyze data and provide recommendations of technical results to the management team
  • Schedule work, monitor progress, and resolve problems to ensure project completion
  • Create project plans and timelines and assist management with defining budget requirements
  • Promptly resolve plant build issues and field problems
  • Participate in component integration events and prototype testing
  • Support FMEA analysis

Requirements For Advanced Cell/Module Design Engineer

  • Master of Science degree in Electrochemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Computer Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering, Physics (ABET Accredited University)
  • 3+ years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge & experience of cell chemistries employed in high voltage battery technologies and energy management
  • Strong mechanical, thermal, electrical and safety aptitude
  • Experience identifying and solving the root cause for complex problems
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • High level of analytical skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and able to effectively work in a diverse multi-cultural environment
  • Experience with tools like MATLAB Simulink, GT, ANSYS, etc.
  • Strong PC skills including MS Office and database tools
