Description For Senior Operational Technology Engineer

Smith+Nephew, a leading global medical technology company, is seeking a Senior Operational Technology Engineer to join their Global Operations Technology team. This role represents an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of manufacturing and technology, implementing Manufacturing 4.0 initiatives including Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), production monitoring/control, and factory simulation.

As a Senior OT Engineer, you'll be responsible for identifying, implementing, and supporting digital manufacturing projects across Smith+Nephew's global operations, working with cross-functional teams to improve manufacturing systems and processes.

This role combines technical expertise with strategic thinking, requiring experience in both manufacturing engineering and modern digital technologies. You'll be instrumental in developing and implementing IT/OT architecture, working with IIoT protocols, and ensuring compliance with medical device industry regulations. Responsibilities For Senior Operational Technology Engineer

  • Lead strategic projects collaborating with IT, Operational Excellence, Data Analytics, and Operations
  • Develop and implement IT/OT architecture, standards, and governance
  • Implement technologies for automated data gathering and analysis
  • Provide technical support for Global OT applications
  • Support site OT teams in local initiatives
  • Provide Design for Automation recommendations to NPD Manufacturing Engineering
  • Ensure processes align with regulations
  • Present to Operations Technology VP and Site Leaders
  • Drive improvements to meet team and individual savings targets

Requirements For Senior Operational Technology Engineer

Kubernetes
  • BS in Engineering, Science, or related field
  • Minimum 5+ years professional work experience in Manufacturing Engineering, Operations Technology or Manufacturing IT
  • Experience implementing IIoT communications protocols such as OPC/UA, MQTT, HTTP/REST
  • Strong knowledge of networking, IT/OT architecture, and security concepts
  • Experience in medical device/biopharma sector
  • Understanding of medical device software validation requirements
  • Proven knowledge of PLC configuration and networking
  • Experience with Tulip Interfaces, PTC KepServer, and digital factory software
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Familiarity with GAMP 5 and medical device industry standards/regulations
  • Knowledge of manufacturing metrics and KPIs
