Description For Launch Automation & Controls Engineer (Starship)

SpaceX is seeking a Launch Automation & Controls Engineer for their Starship program. This role focuses on designing, integrating, and commissioning control systems for Starship Launch pads, with an emphasis on electrical control system design for the orbital propellant farm. The ideal candidate will own the design and build of a launch control system capable of supporting Starship's ambitious goals.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Designing and commissioning control systems for Starship Launch pads
  2. Creating industrial electrical control panels compliant with NFPA79/NEC/UL508A standards
  3. Developing PLC code and configuring various industrial communication protocols
  4. Integrating systems robust to mechanical stresses of Starship launch
  5. Managing electrical cabinet builds, field wiring, and conveyance installs

The role requires a bachelor's degree in engineering and at least 1 year of experience in control systems design and commissioning. Preferred skills include experience with industrial control systems, electrical schematic CAD, PLC programming, and knowledge of relevant electrical codes.

Responsibilities For Launch Automation & Controls Engineer (Starship)

  • Design, integrate, and commission control systems for Starship Launch pads
  • Design industrial electrical control panels which are NFPA79/NEC/UL508A compliant
  • Design electrical schematics
  • Interface control systems with high power equipment and communication equipment
  • Design electrical systems for safe operation in hazardous environments
  • Design, write, and debug programmable logic controller (PLC) code
  • Commission devices using industrial communication protocols
  • Configure, commission and tune variable frequency drive (VFDs)
  • Set up and tune proportional integral derivative (PID) controllers
  • Design systems robust to mechanical stresses of Starship launch
  • Design electrical conveyance
  • Participate in equipment conceptual development
  • Manage electrical cabinet builds, field wiring, and conveyance installs
  • Set, implement, and maintain schedules and budgets
  • Document control system builds for hand off to pad operators

Requirements For Launch Automation & Controls Engineer (Starship)

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of experience in the design and commissioning of controls systems (internship experience qualifies)
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylee due to ITAR requirements
