Description For Internship, Abuse Testing & Engineering, Cell Engineering (Winter/Spring 2025)

Tesla is offering an internship opportunity in Abuse Testing & Engineering, Cell Engineering for Winter/Spring 2025. The internship is expected to start around January or February 2025 and continue through the entire Spring term (i.e. through May 2025) or into Spring/Summer 2025 if available. The program requires a minimum of 12 weeks, full-time and on-site commitment.

The internship is part of Tesla's year-round program that places the best students in positions where they will grow technically, professionally, and personally. Interns work closely with their Manager, Mentor, and team on projects critical to their team's success.

Possible locations for this internship include Palo Alto, CA; Fremont, CA; Austin, TX; and Reno, NV.

The intern may be considered for various teams within Abuse Testing & Engineering, including:

  1. Thermal Test Engineering
  2. Test Systems Engineering
  3. High Voltage Abuse Test
  4. Battery Propagation Resistance Test Engineering
  5. Abuse Test & Engineering R&D
  6. Cell Materials Engineering, Abuse Test

Responsibilities include pushing battery systems to their limits, applying electrical, mechanical, and thermal stresses, providing rapid feedback to inform designs early in development, and understanding how robust systems perform under abusive conditions.

Requirements:

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
  • Strong understanding of heat transfer, combustion, and electrical concepts
  • Experience with materials characterization
  • Knowledge of lithium-ion batteries (preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with assembly, fabrication/modification, instrumentation, wiring, and electrical troubleshooting
  • Experience with CAD (Catia V5, V6 or Solidworks)
  • Experience with software such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, and/or other common programming languages
  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods for prototyping
