Description For Internship, Manufacturing Engineering, Powertrain & Energy Products (Winter/Spring 2025)

Tesla is seeking highly motivated post-secondary interns for their Manufacturing Engineering team, focusing on Powertrain & Energy Products. This internship, starting around January or February 2025 and continuing through Spring 2025, offers a unique opportunity to develop and engineer new processes and high-volume automation equipment. Interns will work closely with Tesla's internal Product Design, Operations, Facilities, Production, and Quality Engineering teams, coordinating cross-functional design activities with tool vendors.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing new Drive Unit, Power Electronics, or Global Battery manufacturing equipment
  • Assuming full ownership of design and technical transfer of line tools to Tesla Operations
  • Qualifying tools with the highest standards of safety, quality, and output

The internship program at Tesla is designed to recognize and develop emerging talent, placing the best students in positions where they will grow technically, professionally, and personally. This is a full-time, on-site internship requiring a minimum commitment of 12 weeks. Multiple locations are possible, including Fremont, CA; Palo Alto, CA; Austin, TX; Reno, NV; Lathrop, CA; and Buffalo, NY.

Responsibilities For Internship, Manufacturing Engineering, Powertrain & Energy Products (Winter/Spring 2025)

  • Develop and engineer new processes and high-volume automation equipment
  • Work closely with Tesla's internal Product Design, Operations, Facilities, Production and Quality Engineering teams

Requirements For Internship, Manufacturing Engineering, Powertrain & Energy Products (Winter/Spring 2025)

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a related field
  • Hands-on experience is a must
  • Excellent grasp of engineering fundamentals
  • Proficient with computer-aided design (CAD) software such as CATIA or SOLIDWORKS
  • Experience with semi-automated / automated manufacturing equipment
  • Experience in a high-volume factory environment
  • Experience with design of tooling, jigs, and fixtures
  • Experience in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
  • Understanding of statistical tools such as Process Capability (Cp, Cpk) and Gauge Repeatability and Reproducibility
  • Experience with 3D modeling
  • Experience with part and assembly 2D drawing
  • Strong analytical/problem solving skills with demonstrated ability to learn concepts quickly
  • Understanding of Geometric Design & Tolerance (GD&T)
