Description For Manufacturing Engineer I - Optics shop

Thorlabs Advanced Photonics (TAP) is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer I to join their Optics shop in Newton, NJ. This role combines hands-on manufacturing expertise with engineering principles to optimize production processes for optical components. The position offers a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge photonics technology while implementing lean manufacturing and six sigma principles.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing production processes, developing assembly techniques, and driving quality improvements across multiple departments including Optical Shop, Coating, Fiber Draw, and Opto-Mechanical Assembly. This role requires a strong foundation in engineering principles combined with practical manufacturing experience.

Key aspects of the role include collaborating with engineering teams on new product development, implementing process improvements, and ensuring efficient production scaling. The position offers exposure to various aspects of advanced photonics manufacturing, from optical component fabrication to quality control systems.

Responsibilities For Manufacturing Engineer I - Optics shop

  • Identify and solve manufacturing issues for new and existing products
  • Plan production layouts for lean manufacturing and six sigma standards
  • Participate in design reviews with engineering department
  • Conduct training to improve manufacturing and testing processes
  • Interface with engineering and operations for new product releases
  • Collaborate with RMA and service departments for customer returns
  • Create and maintain manufacturing process documents
  • Create jigs and fixtures to improve production efficiency
  • Help create and maintain production routing steps and timing
  • Assist in Rev Control and documentation verification
  • Ensure production techniques and capacity scale with growing demand

Requirements For Manufacturing Engineer I - Optics shop

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, Engineering (Optical, Mechanical, Production, etc.), or equivalent
  • Basic computer knowledge including SolidWorks, Microsoft products, and Axapta
  • Experience with manufacturing, configuration management, and product development
  • Experience with quality improvement tools (Lean, Six Sigma, Process Control, FMEA)
  • Familiarity with optics and fabrication of glasses and crystal for optical components
  • Strong ability to work in a group atmosphere
  • Experience using standard measurement equipment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Must be a US Person (ITAR requirements)
