YouTube is seeking a Distinguished Engineer for Video Formats to advance the state of the art in user-generated and broadcast video technology. This role sits within the YouTube Infrastructure team, which is crucial for delivering reliable, scalable, and high-quality video experiences to users worldwide.

The position requires deep technical expertise in video compression technologies, formats, and streaming protocols, with a focus on both traditional video processing and emerging AI-driven solutions. The ideal candidate will bring 15+ years of software engineering experience and 10+ years specifically in video technologies.

As Distinguished Engineer, you'll shape the technical vision for YouTube's video format strategy, working across multiple teams including Chrome, Android, and other Google divisions. You'll influence industry standards and build partnerships with key video technology partners while leading video encoding strategies for both client and server processing.

  • Provide technical vision and strategy for video formats by designing and leading a multi-year technical roadmap

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, a related field or equivalent practical experience
  • 15 years of experience in software engineering
  • 10 years of experience working with video compression technologies and formats
  • Experience building relationships in external ecosystem of video vendors, editors, and open source projects
  • Experience with machine learning-based video processing and generative AI
  • Deep understanding of video quality metrics and optimization techniques
