Hi Taro! I'm considering returning to Google, but I feel like it might be a bad career move and could use some advice.
For context, I worked at Google for 4 years, joining at L3 and leaving at L4. My last review was a "strongly exceeds" (4/5 on their scale.) Since then I worked at a startup for 3 years, and feel like I had the scope and impact to justify an L5 position at FANG.
I recently spoke to a Google recruiter and he told me I have the following options:
Given the state of the job market, and the element of luck involved in passing FAANG coding interviews, I'm hesitant to go through a full interview loop again and am tempted to take the option to rejoin at my old level.
I'm sure I would excel at L4, but I wonder if taking the return offer is going to slow my career progression down by too much. My ultimate goal is to get to L6, but given Google's slow promotion process (which I hear has only gotten worse since I left) I'm somewhat concerned that I'll be stuck at L4 for a while.
Here are my main questions:
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Honestly having a guaranteed Google offer sounds like a godsent in this market. I completely understand not wanting to mess up your career trajectory, but as someone who's struggled immensely to get a job (thousands of applications last year, just recently started at Meta, which was the ONLY, and I mean ONLY company that got back to me and invited me to the interview stage last year. Crazy right?), I would %100 go with a guaranteed offer and figure out how to deal with the career progression there.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Google's team matching take awhile anyway? You could take the L4, and still look for jobs in the meantime while you are in team matching?
Thanks for sharing your experience Ruba, congrats on the Meta offer. The job market really is tough these days isn't it.
I'll definitely still be job searching until team match and offer negotiation are done.
What does the Google L4 offer look like? If it's getting to the lower end of L5 (~$350k TC), I actually think it's worth it to take the guaranteed position. The market is insane right now (the Microsoft layoffs unleashing a bunch of talent back into the market certainly didn't help), so a guaranteed Google offer is quite valuable.
If the offer isn't that good, then I think it makes sense to take the risk and go for L5.
Is this just a bad idea? Maybe I should hold out for a properly leveled and scoped role at another company.
There's nothing wrong with being a Google L4 with 7+ YOE - Many people have that career trajectory. L4 is a terminal level after all, and FAANG mid-level is equivalent to senior at most companies. At Amazon where their mid-level (SDE 2) is so wide, it can even equate to staff at other companies.
Appreciate the thoughts Alex. I suppose I'll see what the return offer looks like and decide from there.
What kinds of teams are more likely to support faster promotions, and what kinds of questions can I ask hiring managers to figure this out?
I recommend this lesson from the mid-level to senior course: https://www.jointaro.com/course/grow-from-mid-level-to-senior-senior-l4-to-l5/finding-the-right-team/
I like this other discussion as well: "What questions can I ask to my to-be manager about the team I'll be joining?"
