How to answer the question "What are you looking for in your next role?"

I get asked this question in almost every recruiter screen so I wanted to ask fellow Taro members how to answer this question the best?

I'm a junior Data Engineer for context

Given how frequently I get asked I wanted to ensure I have a good framework for coming up with a response.

I usually just give something like oh I'm looking to work on challenging problems and tackle data problems and also dabbling into other areas like MLE if needed

The recruiter needs to decide what level you are interviewing for (junior/mid-level/senior/etc) so try to frame your answers in a way that makes it easy for them to decide what level you are.

For example, if you are interviewing for a senior position you are going to want to talk about leading large projects across more than one dev team, dealing with stakeholders, mentoring junior engineers, and even taking part in shaping the roadmap.

Try to understand the leveling guidelines first before coming up with your answers.

A few more options for ideas, of course pick what genuinely is important to you:

    • Working with a great set of collaborative coworkers
    • Having an inspiring manager and or leadership team
    • Growth opportunities
    • Meaningful impact in the world, relevant domain to something important to you
    • Massive scale and impact, or opportunity for helping the company get there
