Description For Automation Engineer

Amazon's logistics center in Werne near Dortmund is seeking an Automation Engineer to join their team. As a crucial part of Amazon's logistics operations, automation is one of the key methods used to optimize processes. The role involves ensuring automated systems function optimally to guarantee timely customer deliveries.

The position sits within the Reliability Maintenance Engineering (RME) Team, which is responsible for maintaining and optimizing equipment across Amazon's global network of fulfillment centers. The team consists of technicians and engineers working together to maintain, repair, and troubleshoot equipment, including innovative technologies unique to Amazon.

As an Automation Engineer, you'll be the site expert for automated systems operation, working with various automated equipment from conveyor belts to sorting systems. You'll coordinate troubleshooting activities and improvement measures while sharing your expertise with colleagues. A key responsibility is ensuring Engineering Technicians are continuously informed and trained on equipment troubleshooting and preventive maintenance.

The role requires a combination of technical expertise and collaborative skills, working with different departments to ensure proper documentation and system maintenance. You'll be part of a team that handles technical tasks ranging from automated packaging system installation to general maintenance supervision and critical equipment repair.

The position offers significant growth opportunities both within the RME team and across Amazon. Working hours may include early mornings, late evenings, or night shifts to minimize operational disruptions during maintenance. The team is empowered to implement new processes or breakthrough technologies like Amazon Robotics or the Complex Item Sorter when better solutions are identified.

Responsibilities For Automation Engineer

  • Monitor, troubleshoot and repair issues with critical systems
  • Work within the EU control network to monitor material transport equipment metrics
  • Create data visualizations for troubleshooting for internal stakeholders
  • Lead or actively participate in continuous improvement projects
  • Collaborate with different departments to ensure proper documentation of all systems
  • Work with colleagues across the company on installation and commissioning of new equipment
  • Support other locations in the EU control network as needed
  • Interpret machine and electrical equipment sketches and develop improvement strategies for IEC-61131-3 compliant code

Requirements For Automation Engineer

Linux
  • State-certified technician, training/apprenticeship as electrical specialist with practical experience or training as industrial master (two years with parallel work experience)
  • Four years of work experience in automation
  • Experience with PLC-controlled automation and error diagnostics for ongoing processes
  • Experience in maintaining various conveyor and sorting systems
  • Experience with material transport, throughput and capacity visualization and monitoring
  • Experience with Microsoft Office, project management tools and EPLAN
  • Knowledge of contact plan and structured programming of Siemens, Allen-Brady or Codesys PLC
  • Advanced English and German language skills (min. B2)
