Description For Optical Manufacturing Engineer, Project Kuiper

Project Kuiper is an innovative program by Amazon aimed at revolutionizing global internet connectivity through a constellation of over 3,000 satellites in Low Earth Orbit. As an Optical Manufacturing Engineer on the Optical Terminal Amplifier Controller (OTAC) production development team, you'll play a crucial role in developing and maintaining production processes for key spacecraft modules.

The position offers a dynamic mix of hands-on engineering and strategic planning:

  • 40% of time spent on the shop floor, implementing processes and solving technical challenges
  • 35% dedicated to independent development work and data analysis
  • 25% focused on collaborative meetings and process management

You'll be joining the Optical Inter-Satellite Link Production team, leading a group of 4-6 manufacturing engineers. The role combines expertise in optical systems design with manufacturing process development, making you a vital link between design/development, factory operations, and quality engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and improvement of production processes
  • Serve as the primary technical interface with the development team
  • Drive capacity increase roadmap and capital equipment decisions

Responsibilities For Optical Manufacturing Engineer, Project Kuiper

  • Conceptualize, design, develop, and improve production processes
  • Serve as primary technical interface to development team for Optical Head Assembly
  • Support operations team in solving technical escalations
  • Own the capacity increase roadmap for production
  • Lead a team of 4-6 manufacturing engineers
  • Implement new processes and solve technical blockers in production
  • Perform production development testing
  • Analyze data sets to identify and implement key production improvements

Requirements For Optical Manufacturing Engineer, Project Kuiper

  • 4+ years of working in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
  • Experience with prototyping and implementation
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or refugee/asylee due to export control laws
  • Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume (preferred)
  • Experience in Fiber Optic Assembly and Optical Amplifier System Design (preferred)
