Description For Lead Data Engineer

At Disney Entertainment & ESPN Technology, we're at the forefront of reimagining magical viewing experiences for the world's most beloved stories while transforming Disney's media business for the future. This Lead Data Engineer role is part of the Product & Data Engineering team, responsible for developing world-class consumer-facing products including streaming platforms Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+.

The position focuses on building and maintaining the Audience Manager Platform (AMP), a centralized Disney audience data platform that captures and processes all Disney consumers' cross-channel behavior. This critical system delivers various data summarizations to multiple endpoints, supporting diverse business needs across the organization.

As a Lead Data Engineer, you'll be working with cutting-edge big data technologies and distributed systems, handling massive datasets that impact millions of consumers worldwide. The role requires expert knowledge in building scalable, fault-tolerant data processing pipelines and backend systems to ensure reliable delivery of audience data.

You'll be joining a team that drives innovation at scale, working across multiple platforms including Apple, Android, Smart TVs, game consoles, and the web. The platforms you'll help develop power core experiences like personalization, search, messaging, and data analytics.

The compensation package is competitive, with a base salary range of $149,300 to $209,600 depending on location (Santa Monica, New York, or Seattle) and experience. Additional benefits include bonus potential, long-term incentive units, and comprehensive medical and financial benefits.

Responsibilities For Lead Data Engineer

  • Build and maintain product-driven initiatives to improve and expand the Unified Messaging Platform
  • Promote and support Agile methodologies
  • Collaborate with squad, Product Managers, Designers, QA, Operations, and other stakeholders
  • Participate in on-call support
  • Serve as an advanced resource to other Data Engineers and mentor junior team members

Requirements For Lead Data Engineer

Python
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Software, Electrical or Electronics Engineering, or comparable field
  • Minimum 7 years of big data engineering experience
  • Hands-on experience with distributed systems (Spark, Hadoop, HDFS, Hive, Presto, PySpark)
  • Strong Python and SQL skills processing big datasets
  • Experience with MPP or cloud database technology (Snowflake, Redshift, Big Query, Databricks)
  • Familiarity with Data Modeling techniques and Data Warehousing methodologies
  • Problem solver with strong attention to detail and excellent analytical and communication skills
