Description For Machine Learning Engineer

Elicit, the AI research assistant, is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer to join their team in Oakland or remotely. This role is crucial in advancing Elicit's mission to radically increase the amount of good reasoning in the world through AI-assisted research.

As an ML research engineer at Elicit, you'll be at the forefront of applying language models to complex research tasks. Your responsibilities will include composing multiple language model calls to accomplish sophisticated tasks, curating datasets for model finetuning, setting up evaluation metrics, and scaling semantic search capabilities.

The ideal candidate will have a strong software engineering background, familiarity with language models or comparable ML/NLP experience, and a startup mindset. You should be comfortable with concepts like transformer architecture, tokenizers, Python decorators, and generic types.

Responsibilities For Machine Learning Engineer

  • Compose together tens to thousands of calls to language models to accomplish complex tasks
  • Curate datasets for finetuning models, e.g. for training models to extract policy conclusions from papers
  • Set up evaluation metrics for model improvements
  • Scale up semantic search from a few thousand documents to 100k+ documents

Requirements For Machine Learning Engineer

Python
  • Strong software engineering background
  • Familiarity with language models (training, finetuning, evaluation), or comparable machine learning or natural language processing background
  • Experience with information extraction, semantic search
