Google's Data Center Engineering team is at the forefront of innovative facility design, focusing on the future of data center technology. This role is part of the Technical Infrastructure team that maintains and develops Google's data centers and platforms. As a Mechanical Engineer in Thermal Systems Engineering, you'll work on complex challenges related to power usage and environmental sustainability. You'll be responsible for optimizing facility efficiency, ensuring compliance with codes and standards, and developing infrastructure improvements. The position involves working with cutting-edge strategies in a research and development environment, where ideas are continuously tested and refined. You'll collaborate with facilities technicians, communicate with senior executives, and serve as a technical expert in mechanical systems. Responsibilities For Mechanical Engineer, Thermal Systems Engineering

  • Define data center system-level, product architecture, and Research and Development, while helping to develop operations and maintenance procedures for systems/processes
  • Conduct engineering analysis and research designs and methods of data center equipment and facilities
  • Ensure designs and installations meet requirements (e.g., predicted cooling, structural, operational concerns, etc.)
  • Serve as Technical Lead in the region
  • Collaborate with Operations, Execution, and Construction teams to develop new data center (DC) mechanical infrastructure products and systems

Requirements For Mechanical Engineer, Thermal Systems Engineering

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering, related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • 10 years of experience in mission critical facility design and construction environments
  • Experience in mission critical facilities and their mechanical infrastructure
  • Master's degree in Engineering, Business or relevant field, or professional engineering license (preferred)
  • Experience in estimating, mechanical design, operation, and commissioning of mission critical data center mechanical equipment
  • Experience in design, construction, and commissioning of mechanical cooling plants, fire suppression systems, fuel oil systems, domestic water systems, and sanitary sewer systems
  • Experience designing modular building scale assemblies, with understanding of mechanical tolerances and tolerance analysis
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering and design principles with expertise in medium-scale production, structural beams/elements, and international building codes
  • Operational knowledge of construction safety procedures
