Description For Research Scientist, Machine Learning and Cognition

Google Research is building the next generation of intelligent systems for all Google products. As a Research Scientist in Machine Learning and Cognition, you'll be part of a team working on cutting-edge projects that utilize the latest computer science techniques. You'll conduct interdisciplinary research at the intersection of cognitive science and AI/ML, partnering with researchers in machine learning, philosophy, and social sciences to address societal questions around machine cognition, consciousness, and multi-agent systems.

Your responsibilities will include authoring research papers, defining data structures and frameworks for research solutions, and identifying new research areas. You'll have the opportunity to contribute to the wider research community by sharing and publishing your findings, collaborating with research programs at partner universities and technical institutes worldwide.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Computer Science or a related field, experience with interdisciplinary research, and a track record of scientific publications. You should be comfortable with coding, software development, and machine learning techniques such as LLM evaluations, fine-tuning, and ML experiment design.

Responsibilities For Research Scientist, Machine Learning and Cognition

  • Author research papers to share and generate impact of research results across the team and in the research community
  • Define the data structure, framework, design, and evaluation metrics for research solution development and implementation under minimal guidance. Identify timelines and obtain resources needed
  • Identify new and upcoming research areas by interacting with potential external and internal collaborators. Help in developing long-term research strategy and plans to expand the impact of Google research with some guidance
  • Conduct interdisciplinary research at the intersection of cognitive science and AI/ML
  • Partner with researchers in machine learning, philosophy and the social sciences to conduct research on cutting-edge societal questions around machine cognition, consciousness and multi-agent systems

Requirements For Research Scientist, Machine Learning and Cognition

Python
  • PhD in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research between cognitive science, computer science, machine learning, or philosophy
  • One or more scientific publication submission(s) for conferences, journals, or public repositories
  • 2 years of experience in coding
  • 1 year of experience owning and initiating research agendas
  • Experience in a multidisciplinary academic group addressing human-centered questions
  • Experience with publications in interdisciplinary venues such as CHI, FAccT, and AIES
  • Experience in software development and machine learning (LLM evals and finetuning, ML experiment design, and ML training)
