Instant is seeking a Founding Typescript Engineer to join their team of 4 in San Francisco. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of real-time database technology.
The role spans three key areas:
Type System Architecture: You'll work on improving Instant's typescript integration, enhancing developer experience through better type ergonomics, intelligent autocomplete, and optimized intellisense output. Projects include implementing typed where clauses, improving schema definitions, and building type-testing infrastructure.
User Interface Development: You'll craft critical developer tools including the CLI, Dashboard, and Explorer. These interfaces are essential for developers spending hours daily managing their databases. You'll work on implementing migration workflows, enhancing the query sandbox, and building an Airtable-level data explorer.
Sync Engine Development: You'll help build and optimize the client-side database that enables offline functionality and real-time updates. This involves solving fascinating computer science challenges like implementing efficient join algorithms, designing better indexing systems, and creating a robust state management system for handling concurrent updates.
The backend is written in Clojure and Postgres, and while Clojure expertise isn't required, enthusiasm for learning it is welcomed.
Instant is building the next generation of database technology, making it easier for developers to create collaborative, real-time applications. The team consists of experienced engineers from Facebook, Airbnb, and other leading tech companies, with a strong focus on developer experience and technical excellence.
The company offers competitive compensation ($150k-$200k base salary with 0.5%-2% equity) and full benefits (medical/dental/vision). They're based in San Francisco and strongly prefer in-person collaboration.
The ideal candidate should be passionate about type systems, have experience building developer tools, and be excited about solving complex distributed systems challenges. This is a chance to join a small, high-impact team working on fundamental developer infrastructure.
If you're excited about building the future of database technology and want to work with a team that values technical excellence, developer experience, and solving hard problems, this could be your perfect next role.
