Microsoft's Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers our cloud services. As a Critical Environment Mechanical Engineer, you will perform a key role in delivering the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's online services including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform.

Key Responsibilities:

Design:
- Provide make-versus-buy recommendations with tradeoffs based on complexity, financial impact, quality, reliability, and time duration.
- Display deep knowledge in multiple technical areas and acquire advanced knowledge of industry trends.
- Create robust, scalable, secure, and extensible designs and verification plans for complex products or feature areas.
- Develop and implement solutions to complex technical and design challenges.
- Write internal device specification sheets and interpret complex details.
- Independently develop drawings for complex, new products or features using modeling tools.

Testing and Verification:
- Review documentation to ensure appropriate test requirements and improvements are included.
- Co-develop methods of measurement for new product technology.
- Identify new tools, test methodologies, and best practices for creating test cases.
- Develop, review, and execute test plans for complex feature areas or products.
- Create external testing supplier or partner engagement plans.
- Conduct complex data/statistical analysis to identify bugs, defects, or failures rates.
- Use root cause analysis to identify complex problems and possible solutions.

Project Implementation:
- Generate project implementation schedules and monitor performance.
- Implement and track product plans accounting for user experience and critical requirements.
- Evaluate and approve reliability of materials, properties, and techniques used in production.
- Identify significant project risks and develop mitigation plans.
- Communicate project progress/status and escalate issues as necessary.

Reporting and Documentation:
- Write customized reports and functional specifications for established products or features.
- Document complex details about materials, components, and functionality.
- Accurately record and track changes to designs following established configuration management.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 2+ years related technical engineering experience
OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field AND 1+ years related technical engineering experience
OR equivalent experience.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Mission-critical services work experience
- Understanding of International Mechanical Code and Uniform/International Plumbing Codes
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent experience
- Experience with critical datacenter environment equipment
- Technical knowledge in facility environments' heating and cooling systems
- Experience with energy-efficient water treatment methodologies
- Understanding of maintenance & operation of critical environment backup electrical equipment
- Knowledge of construction techniques, terminology, and documentation
This role offers a competitive base pay range of USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year across the U.S., with higher ranges for specific locations like the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area (USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year).
