SWATX is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer with a focus on Large Language Models (LLMs) to lead their AI development efforts in the construction and building regulation domain. This role combines cutting-edge NLP technology with practical applications in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. The engineer will be responsible for developing AI models that can interpret complex building regulations and translate them into computer-processable formats, bridging the gap between unstructured regulatory text and structured Building Information Modeling (BIM) data. This is a unique opportunity to apply advanced language models to solve real-world challenges in the construction industry, working with a cross-functional team of computational and BIM engineers. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in NLP, experience with modern LLMs, and the ability to design sophisticated language understanding systems. While the role is initially a 3-month contract, there is potential for extension, offering both professional growth and the chance to make a significant impact in automating building compliance processes.
Responsibilities For ML Engineer (LLM Focus)
- Lead development of AI models focused on language tasks
- Design and fine-tune large language models for interpreting building regulations
- Develop LLM-based pipelines to parse and understand regulatory text
- Convert interpreted regulations into structured representations
- Enable system to query BIM model's IFC metadata using natural language inputs
- Collaborate with Computational and BIM engineers
- Integrate LLM into the overall pipeline
- Test and refine LLM interpretations against sample regulations
Requirements For ML Engineer (LLM Focus)
- Strong background in NLP and language models
- Experience with transformer-based LLMs (GPT, BERT)
- Understanding of prompt engineering and fine-tuning techniques
- Proficiency in Python and ML libraries (TensorFlow/PyTorch, HuggingFace Transformers)
- Familiarity with JSON, XML, or other structured data formats
- Excellent logical reasoning skills
- Good communication skills
- Knowledge of construction/building regulations or willingness to learn
