Description For Motion Controls Engineer, Vehicle Controls

Tesla's Vehicle Motion Controls team is at the forefront of developing cutting-edge control algorithms that power the exceptional vehicle dynamics in Tesla vehicles. This role combines advanced physics principles with control techniques to create industry-leading vehicle motion control systems. The team has achieved significant milestones, including the first-ever Steer-by-Wire and Rear-Steer system on the Cybertruck, Track Mode for the Plaid Model S, and innovative stability control systems.

As a Motion Controls Engineer, you'll work on sophisticated control algorithms for brake, suspension, steering, aero, and powertrain systems. The position requires a strong foundation in physics and control theory, along with practical implementation skills. You'll collaborate with various teams, including Chassis Hardware, Vehicle Dynamics, and Self Driving teams, to deliver Tesla's signature performance characteristics.

Responsibilities For Motion Controls Engineer, Vehicle Controls

  • Develop control-oriented models of chassis systems for analysis and estimation
  • Evaluate novel subsystems related to vehicle motion
  • Work with Vehicle Dynamics Engineers on sensing, actuation, and algorithm designs
  • Develop and implement control algorithms for system capability
  • Develop and implement estimation and monitoring algorithms
  • Test, debug, and calibrate algorithms in simulation and in car
  • Ensure stability and performance using SIL and HIL tools
  • Advance vehicle motion control technology for Tesla vehicles

Requirements For Motion Controls Engineer, Vehicle Controls

Python
  • Excellent background in linear systems analysis, state-estimation, and control design
  • Excellent understanding of vehicle dynamics
  • Ability to design, analyze, implement, test, and debug control systems
  • Cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Understanding of electric drivetrains and chassis actuators
  • Proficiency with Matlab/Simulink/Python
  • Basic proficiency with C/C++
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience with vehicle dynamics performance characteristics (preferred)
  • Expertise in advanced control and estimation techniques (preferred)
