Description For Backend Engineer

Wordware is building an IDE for AI agents using natural language, allowing users to design, test, and deploy AI systems without writing code. As a Backend Engineer, you'll be instrumental in designing and scaling the core systems that power Wordware.

You'll work on critical infrastructure including:

  • Building the execution runtime that transforms natural language into traceable agent workflows
  • Contributing to Wordware's proprietary programming language for expressing logic and agent interactions
  • Designing scalable infrastructure for running thousands of concurrent AI agents
  • Integrating external APIs with robust error handling and auth flows

The role requires strong expertise in TypeScript/Node.js and deep SQL knowledge. You'll be joining a fast-moving team backed by top investors (Spark Capital, Felicis, YC) with a $30M seed round. The company has shown impressive growth, reaching 300k+ users since launching in August.

This is an in-person role at their San Francisco office, with a collaborative startup culture including team activities and perks like free food. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, can handle ambiguity, and wants to help shape the future of how AI is built and deployed.

The role offers competitive compensation ($140K-220K) and the opportunity to work directly with repeat founders who have prior exits. While intense, the environment emphasizes both hard work and enjoying the journey of building something transformative.

Requirements:

  • 4+ years engineering experience shipping production systems
  • Strong TypeScript/Node.js skills
  • Experience with scalable systems and SQL
  • Ability to make architectural decisions quickly
  • Comfort with startup pace and ownership

The interview process is streamlined for exceptional candidates, typically completing within 2 weeks through stages including technical and system design interviews.
