I interviewed for a specialist engineer role. The onsite interview consisted of two coding rounds, followed by one behavioral round, and then two system design rounds.
The first system design round was great. I had the chance to meet some very experienced people in my field and talk about interesting concepts.
However, the second system design round was not great. This round was specifically out of my domain. The interviewer asked how to design something completely unrelated to the job's position. Keep in mind this was for a specialist role, not a generic software engineer role.
The interviewer for this second system design round was also a specialist, and they didn't seem to know the material either. I'm really not sure what the point of that round was.
I received a rejection a few days later.
