Senior Software Engineer Interview Experience

Process

The first phone screen is straightforward, and the HR rep is pleasant.

The second interview is with the Engineering Manager. My experience was positive; the manager was pleasant, and they mostly ask non-technical questions.

The third step is receiving a take-home assignment which "should only take 3 hours," but that's BS. You'll spend way longer, hoping to maximize your chances to impress them.

I didn't hear back until about a week after submitting the assignment. The feedback was very generic, stating the program had "bugs."

Make no mistake: the take-home assignment is easy, but if you don't give them exactly what they want, they won't like it.

Questions

Q: Tell me of a project you worked on that was particularly challenging and how you worked through it?

Q: Take-home assignment:

  1. Make sure you include unit tests for every function in your program.
  2. Meet the requirements EXACTLY as they ask you – you will not get a chance to take them through it. Doubtful they'll even run it; they will probably only read it and draw their own conclusions.
