New to a job and there's a ton going on - What should I focus on?

I have a lot of expectations on my plate, and it can be hard to handle. I'm being put on a project soon, but I do have some spare time here and there. How can I make effective use of this time, and is there anything I should focus on during onboarding in general?

    • Given that you're a senior eng, focus on building relationships. Everyone is fine with talking to the new person on the team -- take advantage of that and talk to other engineers and cross functional partners. Even if you don't end up working with them closely, you'll still benefit from understanding their perspective.
    • It sounds like you have some anxiety about the expectations around onboarding. Have you clarified this with your manager? Ask explicit questions about what the expectations are for you at the 30 day and 90 day mark on the team. Beyond having a conversation about it, have it written down!
